The Instituto Health Sciences Career Academy (IHSCA) was launched in 2010 as the first public charter high school dedicated entirely to preparing young people for meaningful careers in the health sciences. IHSCA’s goals are to prepare urban youth to: 1) succeed in competitive colleges and universities, 2) obtain job-readiness certification for entry-level positions with higher wages in healthcare, and 3) gain new awareness and seek a healthier lifestyle. At full capacity, IHSCA will serve 720 students annually. Currently beginning its third year of operations, IHSCA is working to prepare over 500 young people for successful futures in the health sciences. 95% of students are low income, and 95% are Latino.
